We went to lunch at Wing Coop today at work, where they have an 11 wings in 11 minutes challenge. These are hot wings, very hot wings. Fortunately, someone had a little cup of the challenge sauce with fries. I took a full dip of sauce with a fry, and so did Raj. Raj is from India and we were competing in a manly display of spicy food consumption. It went something like this:
Hmmm – that’s not bad.
Lots of cayenne, I can handle cayenne.
Here comes the post cayenne throat burn, tongue is ok.
Ooooh, what is that, a little subtle heat in the back of the throat.
Ah, saliva running, should have the fire under the tongue coming on – habanero?
Yep, habanero – lots of habanero
Cayenne and habanero - Getting bad now – water
Getting worse – more water
Anyone got a cube of butter – hmmm rich creamery butter.
I am dying – just breath, focus on breathing
Lungs on fire from breathing. Please God, if you love me bless me to live through this, I promise to be a better man. I’ll never make fun of Rich again.
Getting better – mouth is fine, throat still burning
Sinuses are cleared now, and so the entire lymphatic system.
I am going to live. There is a God and he loves me.
Immune response exhausted.
That wasn’t so bad, only a 15 minute burn.
Ray: “I’ll have the Raspberry-Chipotle sauce wings please.” (way down on the spicy meter)
“Hey Rich, why don’t you try the challenge, it wasn’t that bad.” Ray said lying through his teeth.
“It’s hot, but it’s OK.” Raj said hoping to watch someone else writhe in the pains of culinary hell.
They gave us two, count them two of the 11 sauce wings. Rich ate both. He covered them in blue cheese sauce to get them down quickly, and had the second one down by the first one started the saliva running.
We have pictures – see Amy for Rich’s moment of triumph.
Conclusion: I went fry for fry with Raj – Oh, yeah! And I also got to watch Rich burn the cilia out of his throat. Lunch and a show!
