Andrew James Cope has been the resident family Autist for many years. Actually Down Syndrome and Autistic. His unique vision gives him a sense of order and proportion that is different, challenging and truly creative. Andrew has the strength to be artistic while staying within the confines of a space. He creates disorder with order. It is something that must be seen to understand.
Notice in the “Hidden Christus” how he uses an obscuring pair of candles to call attention to the Christ. Consider how Christ was the Son of God and yet was meek and mild and submitted to all things. This combined with the Savior’s commandment to be like a candle on a candle stick and give light to the whole house reminds us of the power of a single example. Brilliant, simply brilliant.
Adding a gumball machine and rearranging creates a sense of whimsy, a realization that we are all children of God, a reminder not to take things too seriously, but to enjoy the moment.
Stacking is a recurring theme in Andrew’s work. The photos above show his diverse and fertile imagination in this genre.
Here he combines his love of stacking and order in “Variations of a Green Jelly Cupboard”. I am especially fond of the bottom right image of “Stack of Canned Fish and Peanut Butter”.
“Birthday Meat Candle” and “The Closet Snacker” need no explanation.
Here Andrew is enjoying some time with his Muse Alvina on a Frontrunner train and on day out to Lagoon with School mates. When not creating art he can be found in spending time in his room, paying and watching train and Disneyland videos online. He is especially fond of “Small World.”
Due to the overwhelming response from our last post we have included a new work from Winston Waldorf Churchill. This is the last of the “Dog on a Blue Couch” series. He has moved on to his “Dog on a Loud Quilt” format.
